You both want the best for the children, but maybe you don’t agree on how to do that?
Sometimes an existing arrangement needs to change to improve things for every one. How can you take every one’s needs and wishes into account?
We offer Child Inclusive Mediation – sometimes called “direct consultation”- with a family mediator who is a trained specialist child consultant. The Child Inclusive Mediation is available as part of the mediation process and provides parents with a chance to understand the thoughts, views and wishes their children have regarding the future of the family.
CAFCASS has suggested that children aged 10 and above should generally be offered access to a mediator when questions about their future are being resolved in mediation. Children welcome having their feelings and opinions heard. Siblings can be seen separately or together depending on what the children themselves prefer and younger children may be seen if the mediator considers it appropriate.
During Child Inclusive Mediation the child will be able to talk completely confidentially with the mediator. The meeting will usually last for about 45 minutes. If the child does have something that they would like the parents to take into consideration when making their decision, the mediator will, with the child’s permission, share this with the parents in their mediation. The final decisions and arrangements are always made by the parents and it is important that children understand they are not responsible for making any of the decisions.
If you are considering Child Inclusive Mediation why not phone for a confidential 15 minute consultation with one of our mediators who will be happy to answer any of your questions.
